In 1977, Dennis Wilson launched Pacific Ocean Blue, the first solo LP by a member of the world-famous Beach Boys. Amazingly, Dennis—the band’s drummer, surfer and all-around free spirit— emerged from the shadow of his older brother, pop genius Brian Wilson, and shocked the world by creating a heartfelt body of work unlike anything the Beach Boys had ever produced. Over 30 years later, Pacific Ocean Blue remains one of the most intoxicating solo showcases by a Wilson brother.

Like every great surf combo worth its salt, the Astronauts were fully aware that the dragstrip was only a few miles away from the beach! When it came time to cut their 1964 LP, Competition Coupe, the fiery Boulder, Colorado quintet retooled their slippery-when-wet sound to accommodate the supercharged, A-gas burning crowd faster than the light blinks green on a Christmas-tree drag stack.

From their earliest days as 12-string-wielding folk-rockers, to the thrilling psychedelic excursions of their raga-rock period to their 1968 birthing of country-rock, the Byrds were always accorded a hero’s welcome in England. What better place to record founding Byrds member/guitarist/singer Roger McGuinn’s new version of the band—featuring fretboard ace Clarence White, bassist Skip Battin and drummer Gene Parsons—than London’s Royal Albert Hall!

The Pretty Things never made it to America in the 1960s. While their contemporaries were touring the States, building brand recognition and laying the foundation for longterm careers in the business, the Pretty Things were toiling in clubs and concert halls across Europe, or — more bizarrely — attempting to conquer New Zealand (they succeeded only in outraging it). Whether through bad judgment, bad timing or simple bad luck that vital mid-60s U.S. tour never happened.

By 1969, Spirit—guitarist Randy California, his stepfather Ed Cassidy on drums, vocalist Jay Ferguson, keyboard man John Locke and bassist Mark Andes—had become one of the hottest young bands in Los Angeles and was one of the first to prove that albums were becoming more important to an act's success than singles.

Elephant Mountain, the magnetic third album by the Youngbloods, is commonly looked upon as the pinnacle of the legendary Bay Area combo’s abundant eight-year career. From its spine chilling opening track—the strains of a somber Appalachian fiddle permeating “Darkness, Darkness”—the listener is inexorably sucked into psychedelic quicksand by the haunting vocals of Jesse Colin Young...

When the Byrds cut the two songs featured on Live In Holland 1971 they may have been nearing the end of the trail, but this totally revamped Byrds lineup had plenty of firepower left in their mighty arsenal.

Gene Clark became the first member of a major U.S. rock band to go solo when he left the Byrds and released his stirring 1966 debut LP Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers. Clark then cut a pair of sparkling, Gary Usher-produced/Curt Boettcher-arranged tracks —“The French Girl” and “Only Colombe”—as his final single for Columbia, a release that was unfathomably canceled at the 11th hour by the label, thus robbing the world of this glistening, baroque-pop gem.

Gram Parsons, onboard with the Byrds only for their 1968 LP Sweetheart of the Rodeo, would find fame a year later with the Flying Burrito Bros. Equally fascinating today, is Parsons' original combo, the International Submarine Band, whose country-rock synthesis laid the groundwork for the down-home stylings by the Byrds and Burritos.

They weren’t from Liverpool… but they were 100% British! Liverpool Five forged their tough-as-nails R&B/Beat sound in the unforgiving clubs of London and Germany, and on concert stages across the Far East, before relocating to the U.S. West Coast, where they set about invading America from within.

Smokin’ at the Half Note by Wes Montgomery and Wynton Kelly, originally released by Verve in 1965, shouldn’t need a build-up for anyone whose ears have been open for the last 40 years. When you begin a live session with 13 minutes of “No Blues,” a cornerstone of the Miles Davis Quintet with Hank Mobley, circa 1961, you’d better have your stuff together.

Tracked for the Argo label in 1959, Kenny Burrell's A Night at the Vanguard is a prime example of the masterful art of this Detroit native. Accompanied by a superb rhythm section of bassist Richard Davis and Roy Haynes on drums, Burrell weaves his magic before a spellbound Village Vanguard crowd.

Jim Flora (1914-1998) created dozens of fun, yet diabolic album covers for Columbia Records and RCA Victor during the 1940s and '50s. His canvases pulsed with angular hepcats bearing funnel-tapered noses and shark-fin chins who fingered cockeyed pianos and honked lollipop-hued horns.

Flora has posthumously added Sundazed to his client roster: his heirs have authorized us to feature a vintage Flora rocket ship illustration on a special edition t-shirt. The space cruiser originally appeared on the back of a 1958 LP by guitarist Billy Mure.

These special edition t-shirts are available in two color combinations:

:: Red and Blue Jim Flora Rocket Ship T-Shirt
:: Yellow and Orange Jim Flora Rocket Ship T-Shirt

"The Byrds were still a year and change from their messy end when they played the newly unearthed London show on Live at Royal Albert Hall 1971 (Sundazed). This is the (Untitled)-era Byrds — singer-guitarist Roger McGuinn, drummer Gene Parsons, bassist Skip Battin and lead guitarist Clarence White — in sparkling last-hurrah mettle, mixing space flight and prairie dust in jangle and repertoire, and singing, at the very end, a short, wonderful “Amazing Grace” in backwoods-chapel a cappella harmonies."

Forever Changes enters Grammy Hall of Fame

The American Recording Academy recently selected Love’s classic 1967 album Forever Changes to receive the coveted Grammy Hall of Fame Award. Established in 1973 to honor recordings that are at least 25 years old and that have “qualitative or historical significance,” the Grammy Hall of Fame comprises a list of nearly 800 iconic and influential releases made between 1905 and 1982.

Jerry Cole, one of the premier session guitarists from the glory-days of pop and rock 'n' roll, died Wednesday, May 28 at the age of 68. When he wasn't busy fronting budding surf stars Jerry Cole and the Spacemen for 3 albums on the Capitol label, Cole was right at home playing whatever someone else's recording date called for. Whether it was surf, country, jazz, blues or psychedelia, Jerry Cole could do it all. Cole played on dates by both Frank and Nancy Sinatra, Elvis Presley, the Byrds, Ray Charles, Ricky Nelson, Dick Dale, the Beach Boys, B.B. King Johnny Rivers and a multitude of others too numerous to mention. In addition to all his well-documented studio work, Cole filled many a late night by recording hundreds of low-priced budget LPs under a bevy of assumed group names. He enlisted the very best studio-honed musicians to cut these drugstore-ready recordings: Earl Palmer on drums, Larry Knechtel on bass, Steve Douglas on tenor sax and Don Randi on keyboards. "It would flow so much easier because these guys knew exactly what was demanded of them," said Cole to Sundazed in 2005. Of all the plaudits that came his way, Cole was proudest of being legendary record producer Phil Spector's favorite guitarist. "I beat out Glen Campbell, I beat out James Burton, I beat out Tommy Tedesco," said Cole. "I thought that was pretty much of an honor." A vital part of the extended Sundazed family and a man every bit as professional in an interview as he was in the studio, Jerry Cole will be deeply missed.

What is the source material you've used for your mono 13th Floor Elevators LP???

Bob Irwin replies: Many, many years ago - in fact, during the earliest years of Sundazed - I had extremely brief access to a 1:1 (Summit Sound) copy of the original mono master for the Elevators album; myself and another producer-friend were digging deep in a major label's vault and came across a huge load (hundreds?... thousands?) of ancient analog tapes, all undocumented, that were apparently intended for record-club use, (or had been submitted to the label/club for release consideration). Thankfully - with a wonderfully cooperative librarian's help - I quietly copied the reel (to 30ips 1/2" analog tape), because when I went to see if I could again extricate it just a few months ago, I was informed that all of those particular record-club tapes had been "scrapped nearly 15 years ago"... (And you can't believe some of the other things that were in there - it would make you cry...)

Admittedly, the reel was in less-than-stellar shape in some spots, ie: due to an improper wind, some of the endings of songs by the leader tape exhibited oxide-loss issues, etc.. When mastering our album, rather than pulling the fader early (as I believe has been done on all other versions of this release currently available), I sourced and attached approximately four endings/fade-outs, each less than 6 seconds, from a mint, mono, original I.A. pressing of the album.

As far as we're concerned, our new mono vinyl version is the best sounding Elevators master currently in existence. By far. The release, which KILLS in mono, to the best of my knowledge, has NEVER been reissued in anything but the less-powerful, less-exciting stereo mix. Again, we feel that the Sundazed mono vinyl of the Elevators album is positively DEADLY! Mono, mono, mono!!!

Sundazed Music, along with the members of Moby Grape and their management, regret to announce that Sundazed has discontinued the sale and distribution of the first three Moby Grape titles, "Moby Grape," "Wow" and "Grape Jam." The two remaining albums, "Moby Grape '69" and "Truly Fine Citizen," will continue to be available from Sundazed. These titles were manufactured under license for Sundazed by Sony BMG Music Entertainment. It was Sony BMG Music Entertainment's decision to cease production of the first three titles, as a result of a longstanding and ongoing dispute over control of the Moby Grape album catalogue between Sony BMG Music Entertainment and an outside party. As Moby Grape's fans are well aware, the band's career has long been dogged by business disputes far beyond the musicians' control. These issues have contributed to keeping the band's music out of print for lengthy periods—a situation that Sundazed Music had hoped to redress with its exhaustive Moby Grape reissue series.Sony BMG's decision comes as a surprise to Moby Grape and Sundazed, to say the least. Both band and label had invested considerable time, energy and attention into reissuing these albums with the respect and loving care that they have always deserved, and were excited to have the opportunity to make this music available once again to old and new fans.We at Sundazed are disappointed to be unable to continue to distribute the first three Moby Grape titles, but we remain honored to have "Moby Grape '69" and "Truly Fine Citizen" as part of the Sundazed catalogue.

The 45 RPM single — a revered record format that Sundazed will keep functional forever! Micro Grooves spinning on a turntable with fuzzed-out mayhem blurting from your tiny speakers. How good can it get?
