| Originally a folk-rock combo from Boston, the Youngbloods didn’t hit full stride until they relocated to San Francisco in 1967, just in time for the Summer of Love proliferation of hippies and flower children. Thanks to the “voice in a million” lead vocals and solid bass of Jesse Colin Young, the keyboards and guitar of multi-instrumentalist Banana and the jazz-influenced time-keeping of drummer Joe Bauer, the band’s sound was constantly changing, from its early folk, country and ragtime roots, to a more ethereal, jazzy sound with the occasional foray into ‘50s doo-wop and Appalachian drone. The Youngbloods are also justly renowned today for their Love Generation anthem “Get Together.” |
