Kings Verses
Kings Verses

A 1966 fuzz-drenched combination of early Arthur Lee & Love and the 13th Floor Elevators with Roky lost in a Jimson Weed haze, the Kings Verses would soon play LA's Griffith and Elysian Park Love-Ins, but these never issued recordings find them massively raw and alive, and maybe a little angry at being "stuck in Fresno again."

Sneaky Pete Kleinow
The Shiloh Records Anthology

Sneaky Pete Kleinow was best known as a mind-altering pedal steel guitarist, and an integral part of the sound of Gram Parsons' original Flying Burrito Bros. Every rock fan worth his salt knows Sneaky as the brilliant steel player zigzagging his way across The Gilded Palace of Sin, the Burritos' stunning 1969 debut, and as the band member on the album cover decked out in an all-black Nudie suit with a golden pterodactyl on the chest, where Superman's red "S" would have been. And that was Sneaky, to a T: super-hero steel guitarist to no less than the Rolling Stones, Booker T. & the MG's, Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash, Doug Sahm, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Randy Newman, Little Richard, Frank Zappa, Leonard Cohen and John Lennon among countless others. Here's a brilliant taste of the pedal steel guitar genius of Sneaky Pete Kleinow. Long may he wave.

Knickerbockers

Jerk & Twine Time

When it all boils down, yer average band - regardless of size - revolves around the talents of one or two guys; all the other gimokes are just tryin’ to keep up and stay outta the way. Which is precisely why the Knickerbockers weren’t anybody’s “average” band. These four frighteningly (and equally) talented gents created a repertoire that mirrored the best trends of pop and rock throughout the ‘60s, and all for a label that left the best stuff in the can...until we gotta hold of ‘em!

Rockin'! with the Knickerbockers

Here's jury-convincing evidence that when the Knickerbockers first assaulted U.S. charts with "Lies" in 1965—and were rumored to be the Beatles recording under an alias—it was as much a compliment to the Fab Four as it was to the legendary New Jersey combo. Now available on compact disc at last, Rockin' with the Knickerbockers has every smoking, upbeat Knicks classic you'll ever need direct from the Challenge Records original mono masters.

Knickerbockers — Gotta Stop This Dreaming Single
When it comes to combing through the Knickerbockers tape archives, Sundazed prides ourselves on having chased down every inch of tape on our heroes. The one recording that's alluded us all these years, though, is the legendary lost yuletide effort, "I Want a Girl For Christmas". Well we've finally got it direct from the original session demo tape. With its amazing vocal arrangement, this'll remind one and all that the Knickerbockers made better demos than most groups' masters. Backed with the equally stunning (and unreleased) "Gotta Stop This Dreaming".

The Leathercoated Minds
A Trip Down The Sunset Strip

In the annals of sixties West Coast exploitation album-making, A Trip Down the Sunset Strip by the Leathercoated Minds is in a class all by itself. Serving up radically rearranged, cool covers of the era, red hot guitar instros (courtesy of producer J.J. Cale), and authentic sound effects from the Strip, it succeeds as the perfect time capsule of Los Angeles' teeming teen scene, c.1966. From the pristine Viva Records mono master tape.

Arthur Lee
Acoustic Demos 1971

Sonic archaeology! In a move that defies rational belief, Sundazed has unearthed an unissued 1971 album by revered Los Angeles rock band Arthur Lee & Love, languishing in the Columbia Records tape vault. And that's not all! We've also uncovered a marvelous batch of acoustic demos for the ‘71 album, featuring just the magical voice of Arthur Lee and his acoustic guitar. It's a thrilling twin-discovery of ultra-important material that no one knew existed!

The Love Exchange — The Love Exchange
The Love Exchange may have called Los Angeles home, but they had San Francisco blood tripping through their veins. The focal point of the band, 16-year-old Bonnie Blunt—her clarion voice a heavenly hybrid of Grace Slick and Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane—burns bright as the sun while Walt Flannery's hypnotic ballroom keyboards and the spellbinding guitar tandem of Dan Altchuler and Fred Barnett swirl around her like the perfect soundtrack for a Griffith Park Love-In. We've added six previously unissued bonus tracks to their sole 1968 album.

Bryan MacLean — ifyoubelievein
ifyoubelievein is, in a sense, the Love record that never was: solo demos and home recordings of fourteen original MacLean songs, all written in the earliest and most vital years of Love and all but three virtually unheard in any form since MacLean wrote them over 30 years ago. It took a lot of time for the music on ifyoubelievein to end up where it always belonged — on record, as Bryan MacLean originally wrote and envisioned it. And it has been worth the wait. Listen and be forever changed.

The Maze — Armageddon
You've got it, Sherlock, their album title refers to the end of the world as we know it on that cataclysmic day of reckoning (no Hallmark cards available yet). And the advent of earsplitting, cortex skewering bands like the Maze really did signal the sultry dog days of the sixties. But just like that ultimate orgasmic blast at the end of a great fireworks show, what a perfect way to go.

Roger McGuinn — Live from Spain
It had been nearly 20 years since Roger McGuinn had last performed in Spain, but in September 2004 the former Byrds leader and two of his treasured and trusty 12-string guitars made their way to the Basque medieval city of Vitoria-Gasteiz for a special solo set at the revered Azkena Rock Festival. And for this magical visit, McGuinn fans will be thrilled to learn, the tape was rolling.

Beautifully recorded by Spanish national radio, this incredibly intimate, 21-song album finds McGuinn chiming his way through glorious versions of Byrds hits (“Turn! Turn! Turn!,” “Eight Miles High,” “So You Want to Be a Rock ’n’ Roll Star,” and others) and his trademark inimitable readings of Bob Dylan classics (“My Back Pages,” “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” and, of course, “Mr. Tambourine Man”); along the way, the folk-rock icon peppers the program with poignant anecdotes about his career and the songs themselves. Long-time fans, however, will completely swoon over the versions of less-frequently revisited gems like “Lover of the Bayou,” “Jolly Roger,” and “Drug Store Truck Drivin’ Man.”

The Mourning Reign
The Mourning Reign

The last great San Jose, Calif. band has a debut album at last! Always mentioned in the same breath as the South Bay's hallowed trio-the Syndicate Of Sound, the Chocolate Watchband and Count Five-the Mourning Reign has been woefully under-represented on wax-until now. We've recently uncovered three powerful 1967 cover versions-the Who's "Run, Run, Run," Cream's "Tales Of Brave Ulysses" and Love's "Signed D.C."-to complete a package combining the band's first, ultra-rare Contour single "Evil-Hearted You"/"Get Out Of My Life, Woman" with all of the fuzz-drenched Golden State Recorders material, like "Satisfaction Guaranteed" and "Our Fate." Mourning Reign guitarist Steve Canali uncorks the band's story on the sleeve, assuring that you (and Dionne Warwick) will never again forget the way to San Jose.

NRBQ — Ludlow Garage 1970
NRBQ, the combo that’s been the epitome of eclecticism over the past four decades has finally agreed to unleash its stunning live concert, Ludlow Garage 1970, by Sundazed. Sketchy cassettes of this epic engagement have been circulating ever since it occurred, and now the real story can be told, direct from the original soundboard masters! Ludlow Garage 1970 catches the dynamic original lineup of NRBQ — lead singer Frank Gadler, keyboard man Terry Adams, guitarist Steve Ferguson, bassist Jody St. Nicholas (aka Joey Spampinato) and drummer Tom Staley—at the peak of their powers, as they shift gears wildly from their own unique originals, to the interplanetary sounds of New Thing jazz, to frantic covers of Wilson Pickett, Little Richard and others. With special focus on Ferguson’s absolutely astounding six-string technique, here’s the very best material from their legendary 1970 shows at the fabled Cincinnati nightspot, as personally selected by Adams, with the full story recounted in the liner notes by longtime band pal Chandler Travis (Incredible Casuals). It’s no damn wonder NRBQ has been described as nothing less than a band that always wove its own magical musical-tapestry.
