The Others — The Others Single
Raised in the LA desert area known as the Antelope Valley-and pals to resident locos, Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart-the Others excelled at the classic carbon monoxide-baked garage sounds rampant in the US in 1966. When the band performed "Gloria" at their high school, it touched off a student body riot and a battle with an apoplectic teacher. With the prof carted off to the old folks home by now, the boys get the last laugh: a Sundazed reissue of their volcanic single.

Buddy Alan Owens
The Best of Buddy Alan Owens

If family lineage had anything to do with it, Buddy Alan would have been a slam-dunk as a country music star. Fortunately, Alan — the son of Bonnie Owens and Country Music Hall of Fame member Buck Owens and the stepson of Bonnie's second husband, Hall of Famer Merle Haggard — had the talent to back up his illustrious background. From his earliest recordings, a duet with Buck Owens in 1968 and his first solo single, written by Haggard, it was apparent that Buddy had his own sound and the record-buying public loved it. Here is a long-overdue career-retrospective, rounding up the very best of the distinctive stylings of Buddy Alan, featuring all the early duets with his dad and the chart-topping singles that soon followed.

Penny Arkade—

Quatrain — Quatrain
Mention the sole and frighteningly rare 1968 LP by LA’s Quatrain among devoted psych collectors and the response will likely be a unison chorus of solemnly nodding heads. Slip a copy of this lost, heavy monster on the turntable, however, and those same heads will bang hard in wah-wah-smeared, acid-rock ecstasy.

From ’65 to ’69 Quatrain was a regular attraction on the Southern California scene, working as the house band at the popular Topanga Corral and up and down the Sunset Strip.

“We played places like the Hullabaloo, the Stratford,” recalls Quatrain drummer Jim Lekas. “We shared bills with The Byrds, Love, the Buffalo Springfield, went up against Spirit in a battle of the bands. We used to play with The Leaves all the time—{Leaves bassist and singer) Jim Pons and I even dated the same girl back then. It was just an incredible period, so much great music going on. And we were right there in the middle of it.”

Produced and engineered by future Neil Young producer David Briggs, Quatrain burns with stinging fuzz-guitar leads (“Fragments,” “Ask Me No Questions,” the cryptic “Flowing Robes”) and floats and flickers like orange sunshine (“Rollin,” “The Tree”).

Sagittarius –The Blue Marble
The shimmering follow-up to Present Tense, 1968’s pop-psych cult classic by producers Gary Usher and Curt Boettcher’s studio-only project Sagittarius (“My World Fell Down”), 1969’s The Blue Marble once again finds Usher crafting still more sunshiney, Beach Boys-esque dreamscapes. As he did for Present Tense, Usher called on the cream of L.A.’s studio pros as well as members of the like-minded Millennium, and the results are once again magnificent.
Layered with creamy vocal harmonies, brass, flute, and Moog synthesizer, The Blue Marble will have fans of the Millennium, the Association, the Yellow Balloon, and similarly grandiose baroque pop acts positively floating on air. Sourced from the original Together Records analog masters, this edition contains four bonus tracks.

These Dallas hotshots, featuring the angelic vocals of Dan Seals and John Colley (who would later commandeer the charts as England Dan & John Ford Coley) fused their heavenly harmonies with mindbending Farfisa-organ stylings and fuzz-drenched guitar work. In short, they had everything that was wonderful about mid-'60s rock & roll.

The Stillroven
— Too Many Spaces
Minneapolis legends the Stillroven forever staked their claim in the 60's garage firmament with their pedal-to-the-metal, frenetic version of "Hey Joe" - still THE definitive version as far as we're concerned. (We've lovingly documented this period of the group on our previous set, entitled, Cast Thy Burden Upon The Stillroven). Now, we've plugged the group into even bigger 'n more ghastly amplifiers and, with their help, have mightily assembled the group's never-before-issued second album. Recorded at A&M Studios in 1968, the long-lost Too Many Spaces showcases the group's heavier, more psychedelic side, all the while perfectly maintaining their homegrown garage roots and midwest-melodic sensibilities!

The Trashmen—Live in Spain
In 1963, the Trashmen achieved a landmark of cultural transcendence when they committed the immortal garage anthem "Surfin' Bird" to vinyl, capturing two and a half minutes of inspired, unhinged abandon that's never been matched in rock 'n' roll. The song climbed to Number Four on Billboard's national Hot 100, and became a massive hit in Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Australia and Sweden. In 2008, onstage in Spain, the remarkably durable combo (with three-fourths of its original lineup intact) blasted through that seminal classic and a passel of vintage nuggets as if the ensuing four and a half decades had never happened.

This high-energy live set, which features an appropriately insane "Surfin' Bird," along with the Trashmen classics "Bird Dance Beat" and "King of the Surf," and the band's distinctive takes on such standards as "Money," "Ghost Riders In The Sky," "Ubangi Stomp," "Miserlou," "High School Confidential" and "Louie, Louie (the last two featuring guest appearances by Eddie Angel and Johnny Rabb of the Neanderthals). All of them are performed with the same good-naturedly demented intensity that continues to endear the Trashmen to fans around the world.

The Trashmen—Teen Trot: Live At Ellsworth, WI, August 22, 1965
On August 22, 1965, some 700 lucky teenagers at Proch’s Popular Ballroom in Ellsworth, Wisconsin shook to the Bird Dance Beat of Minneapolis’ mighty Trashmen. Now, it’s not like this show was one of a kind. Heck, the T-men played 289 dates in 1964 alone. What makes this one so special is that it’s one of only a handful ever captured on tape.

Teen Trot is the first-ever release of a live concert by the Trashmen, and features 20 songs — nine previously unissued — original stage announcements for that “you-are-there” feeling, gobs of cool photos, and more!

Heated squabbles have erupted: one faction insists it's great because it's a priceless historical artifact; the other insists it's the ne plus ultra of cheesy party fun. Less filling! Tastes great! Who cares? They're both right! 20 wondrous cuts: the entire Surfin' Bird LP, plus the best of the Garrett label 45s, from the original master tapes!

The United States of America—Hard Coming Love/Osamu’s Birthday Single
Led by respected avant-garde musician Joseph Byrd, the United States Of America was a seething, fiercely experimental blend of Pink Floyd, John Cage and the Velvet Underground, tempered by the icy yet lovely vocals of Dorothy Moskowitz. Here are two previously unissued versions of works-in-progress, both cut live in the studio by this seminal psychedelic combo that also featured violinist Gordon Marron, bassist Rand Forbes and drummer Craig Woodson. “Hard Coming Love,” raw and rocking here, would become a highlight of the band’s only album. The originally-unissued “Osamu’s Birthday”—whose eerie vocal track was sung phonetically backwards by Moskowitz, then reversed for other-worldly effect—is sung here by Moskowitz... forwards. The effect is still shattering.

Gary Usher — Barefoot Adventure: The 4 Star Sessions
One of the most stubborn myths of revisionist musical history is this: the early '60s were the Dark Ages of American pop, a sad and embarrassing era of prefab teen idols and silly dance crazes that was put out of its misery by the British Invasion.
In reality, strange and wonderful things were happening with American music in the months before The Beatles met Ed Sullivan, creative big bangs that continued to evolve for decades to come.
In Detroit, Berry Gordy was defining the Motown Sound, while Stax and James Brown were inventing soul music. At 1650 Broadway, the Aldon table of songwriters was bringing sophistication to teen pop, while The Four Seasons reinvented group harmony. And in California, where America's youth culture was being born, a trio of songwriters - Brian Wilson, Roger Christian and Gary Usher - were drawing up the blueprints for the West Coast sound.
This collection explores Gary Usher's tenure as co-architect of the happiest pop music ever written, a guileless celebration of sun, surf and cars that's become an enduring symbol of the American dream.
Barefoot Adventure does more than simply collect a bunch of songs that sound great on the car radio and mean exactly what they say (take that, psychedelic music!). It's also a remarkable glimpse of the process, of a struggling songwriter angling for a break, sometimes tapdancing in tangents, oblivious to the bullseye he was hitting on the way to forging an important new sound.
So here's the whole story, 36 terrific tracks, including exclusive Sundazed interviews with Usher himself, with an illuminating essay and track commentary by author and Usher-biographer Stephen McParland. It's musical scholarship that's perfect for parties!
We're not sure if this is history masquerading as fun, or vice-versa, but we're definitely sure that it's fun. Which, in the end, is all that matters.

Wendy & Bonnie — Genesis
(Deluxe Edition)

One of the most remarkable unheard albums of 1969, Genesis, the sole release by San Francisco-based sisters Wendy and Bonnie Flower, has emerged as an acclaimed pop-psych touchstone. Brimming with melodic confections and laced with radiant, sisterly harmonies, the set’s breezy Brazilian splashes and soft-rock strains convey a sophistication that belies the artists’ tender ages (Wendy, 17; Bonnie, 13).

Produced for reissue by WFMU’s Irwin Chusid (Raymond Scott, Esquivel, the Langley Schools Music Project) with Wendy & Bonnie’s full participation, Sundazed’s deluxe edition of this lost gem, on double CD and high-definition triple vinyl adds a wealth of early singles, newly discovered demos, and dramatically alternate vocal takes to the original release. A masterpiece of West Coast rock, Genesis will leave any sunshine pop lover positively beaming.

We The People — Too Much Noise
Garage fans agree: We The People's raging, tough-as-nails punk tracks "Mirror of Your Mind" and "You Burn Me Up and Down" rate among the era's best. But believe it or not this band was capable of even more. Along with the above two hammer-down classics, Too Much Noise collates everything the seminal - and surprisingly diverse - Central Florida outfit cut for the Challenge label during the band's mid-'60s heyday, including the raga-rock fave "In the Past" (covered by the Chocolate Watchband) and the tender folk-rock ballad "(You Are) The Color of Love." Sourced from the original analog masters, here are We the People's three scarce and essential Challenge single sides plus material recorded for the label but unreleased at the time.

Don't Press Your Luck! The IN Sound of 60's Connecticut
The pounding garage-rock din emanating from the jungles of deepest Connecticut could overwhelm the senses, causing the weary NY commuter to become disoriented! Who knew that the most deranged '66-'68 teenage mayhem imaginable would come from Wallingford's Trod Nossel Studios, whose owner/producer Thomas "Doc" Cavalier (a former dentist) recorded top-flight acts as diverse as the tough 'n' melodic Shags ("Don't Press Your Luck"), the R&B-consumed Wildweeds ("No Good to Cry," featuring a Pre-NRBQ Al Anderson on vocals) and fuzzed-out punks the Bram Rigg Set ("I Can Only Give You Everything"). SUNDAZED presents the high-impact, garage-rock havoc - at least two-thirds of it totally unreleased - that finally tears the lid off Connecticut's best-kept rock 'n' roll secret!

Ain't It Hard –
Viva Records Compilation

The short-lived Viva Records label was one wildly eclectic outfit. Helmed by hitmaker Snuff Garrett, this Los Angeles-based imprint targeted the teen marketplace with a series of extraordinary garage / psych / pop singles. The label's command of popular styles prevailed across these Top 40 hopefuls, ranging from the stomping beat of the Shindogs to the psych-fuzz nirvana of the Sound Sandwich. And there's Class of '66 garage-grunge from the Wailers and the Second Helping (yes, that's a teenage Kenny Loggins howling at the moon on the positively snarling "Let Me In," among other selections). With a supporting cast led by Leon Russell and J.J. Cale and bolstered with choice Snuff Garrett Productions like Gypsy Trips and Sunday Servants, Ain't It Hard! stands as an essential anthology of Sunset Strip sixties sounds!

We're Gonna Change The World!: The 60’s Chicago Garage Sound of Quill Records
During the peak years of the ’60s garage band wave, Pete Wright was one of the nation’s top independent record promotion men. His records were not only hits on Chicago’s crucially important WLS but also in small markets throughout the Midwest. Whether in the Windy City or in these smaller outposts, he was tipped off to tons of untapped local talent. So much so that launching a record label was the next logical step. Thus was born Quill Records, a short-lived but supremely cool label heavily indebted to the garage band sound.
