The Remains have always been regarded as the Mount Everest of garage-rock bands, their steaming, fuzzed-up songs copied in every last swaggering detail by legions of cool teenage combos across the nation. AND the Remains were mind-crunchingly good enough to open for the Beatles on their final U.S. tour in 1966! At last, in glorious MONO, here’s the ultimate Remains experience you’ve been missing! Now beefed-up to a stunning, double-LP...

Wielding a battery of exotic instruments that once adorned a thrift-shop front window (bazouki, oud, vina, saz, doumbeg), the Kaleidoscope was every bit as multi-hued and subject-to-change as the telescope full of bright bits of colored glass the band was named after. If there had been a prize for the most eclectic psychedelic outfit, L.A.’s Kaleidoscope would have had it stashed on a shelf...

One of the most remarkable unheard albums of 1969, Genesis, the sole release by San Francisco-based sisters Wendy and Bonnie Flower, has emerged as an acclaimed pop-psych touchstone. Brimming with melodic confections and laced with radiant, sisterly harmonies, the set's breezy Brazilian splashes and soft-rock strains convey a sophistication that belies the artists' tender ages (Wendy, 17; Bonnie, 13).

If there's ever been an album that lives up to its title, this is it—Iggy and the Stooges' apocalyptic, high-octane bombshell, Raw Power! At times this searing, end-of-the-world death platterhome to such proto-punk frontal assaults as "Search and Destroy," "Shake Appeal," and "Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell"—even threatens to surpass its beyond-appropriate moniker.

Although this incarnation of the Stooges imploded not long after its release, Raw Power became the LP that launched a million punk rock bands all around the world, leaving its flaming skidmarks on scenes from London to L.A. to Sydney. Sundazed's high-definition vinyl edition of this primal rock 'n' roll beast features the legendary 1973 Columbia Records mix and includes its Mick Rock photo-adorned inner sleeve.

The self-titled 1969 debut by San Francisco ballroom favorite Santana singlehandedly brought Latin rock into the mainstream. Full of steamy, percolating Latin percussion and leader Carlos Santana’s stinging, razor-sharp guitar work, Santana was released in August of that year, the same month as the group’s legendary appearance at Woodstock. Bearing the smash hits “Evil Ways” and “Jingo,” Sundazed’s exact vinyl replica of this all-time classic rock staple is sourced directly from the original Columbia masters..

Released in 1970, Abraxas, Santana’s second album, sees the band expanding its already wildly diverse Latin rock sound by adding deeper elements of blues and jazz to the sizzling mix. Abraxas is home to two more of the group’s signature monster hits: the hypnotic, rhythmically hectic interpretations of Tito Puente’s “Oye Como Va” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Black Magic Woman.” Sundazed’s exact vinyl replica of this calienté classic is sourced directly from the original Columbia masters.

The late L.A. session guitar genius Jerry Cole has long been worshipped for his work with everyone from the Beach Boys and the Byrds to Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley and by surf fans as the leader of the Spacemen. Simon and Garfunkel's classic album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, released in 1966, marked the duo's emergence as both a brilliant creative force and one of their era's biggest-selling recording acts.

The pair's third album, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme was the first on which they won complete artistic control, and they rose to the occasion brilliantly, delivering an ambitious, autumnal epic that's been described as a folkrock equivalent of the Beatles' Revolver and the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds.

Even by the anything-goes standards of the '60s, the John Howard Abdnor Involvement's 1969 release Intro to Change is a unique album. A decidedly idiosyncratic collision of mainstream pop styles and a left-field psychedelic sensibility, it's the product of one man's unique musical journey.

This digital release marks the first time that this unlikely gem has been available in any form since its original release!

Garage fans agree: We The People’s raging, tough-as-nails punk tracks “Mirror of Your Mind” and “You Burn Me Up and Down” rate among the era’s best. But believe it or not this band was capable of even more. Along with the above two hammer-down classics, Too Much Noise collates everything the seminal—and surprisingly diverse—Central Florida outfit cut for the Challenge label during the band’s mid-’60s heyday.

By far the most ominous-sounding of the Bay Area’s 1960s psychedelic bands, the music of Berkeley’s Mad River comes across like a spiraling, acid-spiked descent into hell. With a raw, garagey style marked by Lawrence Hammond’s quavering vocals and the interlocking exchanges of guitarists David Robinson and Rick Bockner, Mad River’s sound conjures a darker, more menacing version of Quicksilver Messenger Service or early Country Joe and The Fish.

One of the most stubborn myths of revisionist musical history is this: the early '60s were the Dark Ages of American pop, a sad and embarrassing era of prefab teen idols and silly dance crazes that was put out of its misery by the British Invasion.

In reality, strange and wonderful things were happening with American music in the months before The Beatles met Ed Sullivan, creative big bangs that continued to evolve for decades to come.

The kids of 1958 loved ’em, and their first single for Cadence Records shot up the charts like a label owner’s dream. This is the fantastic and fiery album that was supposed to have been released as a follow-up to one of the all-time great instrumental classics, the ultra-menacing “Rumble.” But faster than you can say “Drag Race,” everyone—Cadence label-owner Archie Bleyer included—was talking about this new threat to the morals of American youth.

Could anything be better than surf music played by crazed spacemen? Not likely! And here’s the proof: guitar-wrangler Jerry Cole and His Spacemen’s stupidly rare 1964 LP, Surf Age!

While most of Cole’s albums were cranked out at the astounding pace, Surf Age, his second LP for Capitol Records, was by comparison a production of epic proportions. For the sessions, Cole and his hand-picked all-star crew of LA studio cats labored to create an album unlike any other, an endlessly inventive amalgam of surf and ‘60s pop.

Mastered directly from the original analog tapes and featuring a wealth of unedited takes never before on vinyl, Sundazed’s stunning gatefold double-LP release of this infamously enigmatic opus comes to you wrapped in a sharp outer sleeve bearing specially commissioned artwork by Frank Zappa/Straight Records illustrator Cal Schenkel replicating the album’s planned ’67 design (Deliberately not shown here. A key transitional touchstone in The Byrds’ fabled canon, 1969’s Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde was the next stop in the band’s pioneering country-rock trajectory and the first album by the post-Gram Parsons lineup. With leader Roger McGuinn at the helm of a stellar new edition of the band featuring guitar god Clarence White, drummer Gene Parsons, and bassist John York, Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde sees The Byrds bridging the gap between the psychedelic flights of the group’s mid-’60s albums and the down-home, country-based style developed only months earlier with Sweetheart of the Rodeo.

In 1969, Texas acid-psych warlords the Bubble Puppy burst onto the U.S. Top 20 with “Hot Smoke and Sasafrass,” the slashing, frenzied 2:33 freakout that kicks off the band’s brain-bending debut, A Gathering of Promises. Signed to Houston’s legendary International Artists imprint, the foursome were label mates of such hallowed acts as the 13th Floor Elevators and the Red Krayola. But A Gathering of Promises, the group’s sole International Artists album, stands out from the rest of the roster with its rich vocal harmonies and heavier, Cream/Hendrix/Who sound.

Sundazed is deeply saddened at the passing of legendary songwriter and founder of the Magicians, Alan Gordon, at the age of 64. Alan Gordon was a unique songwriting talent who possessed the genius to write chart-topping tunes to order, but still write them from the heart. He composed strong, memorable melodies and intelligent lyrics with humor, poise and charm. The word that might best describe Gordon's art is "craftsman," a valued trait that has become increasingly rare in this day of computer-driven music.

Born in Natick, Mass. in 1944, Gordon formed the Magicians, which also would include his eventual songwriting partner, Bronx native Gary Bonner, in 1965. The hungry, young, New York-based combo cut a handful of singles for Columbia before realizing they had an innate knack for catchy melodies and clever lyrics that would become national hits for other acts. In addition to composing "Happy Together"—the signature song for the Turtles and voted by publishing giant BMI as one of the Top 50 singles of the 20th century—Gordon and Bonner also wrote tunes for artists as diverse as: the Lovin' Spoonful, Petula Clark, Gary Lewis, Barbra Streisand, Gene Pitney, Freddie Fender, Bobby Darin, Alice Cooper, Dr. Demento, Frank Zappa and the Archies.

As Gary Bonner says: "Alan was one of the brightest lights this world has ever had. His music will live on." Perhaps Alan Gordon, himself, ever the eloquent tunesmith, put it best: "As long as there's an April, a girl and a boy, there will always be music, and I'll be around." Sundazed will deeply miss our longtime friend and colleague.

Jim Flora (1914-1998) created dozens of fun, yet diabolic album covers for Columbia Records and RCA Victor during the 1940s and '50s. His canvases pulsed with angular hepcats bearing funnel-tapered noses and shark-fin chins who fingered cockeyed pianos and honked lollipop-hued horns.

Flora has posthumously added Sundazed to his client roster: his heirs have authorized us to feature a vintage Flora rocket ship illustration on a special edition t-shirt. The space cruiser originally appeared on the back of a 1958 LP by guitarist Billy Mure.

These special edition t-shirts are available in two color combinations:

:: Red and Blue Jim Flora Rocket Ship T-Shirt
:: Yellow and Orange Jim Flora Rocket Ship T-Shirt

What is the source material you've used for your mono 13th Floor Elevators LP???

Bob Irwin replies: Many, many years ago - in fact, during the earliest years of Sundazed - I had extremely brief access to a 1:1 (Summit Sound) copy of the original mono master for the Elevators album; myself and another producer-friend were digging deep in a major label's vault and came across a huge load (hundreds?... thousands?) of ancient analog tapes, all undocumented, that were apparently intended for record-club use, (or had been submitted to the label/club for release consideration). Thankfully - with a wonderfully cooperative librarian's help - I quietly copied the reel (to 30ips 1/2" analog tape), because when I went to see if I could again extricate it just a few months ago, I was informed that all of those particular record-club tapes had been "scrapped nearly 15 years ago"... (And you can't believe some of the other things that were in there - it would make you cry...)

Admittedly, the reel was in less-than-stellar shape in some spots, ie: due to an improper wind, some of the endings of songs by the leader tape exhibited oxide-loss issues, etc.. When mastering our album, rather than pulling the fader early (as I believe has been done on all other versions of this release currently available), I sourced and attached approximately four endings/fade-outs, each less than 6 seconds, from a mint, mono, original I.A. pressing of the album.

As far as we're concerned, our new mono vinyl version is the best sounding Elevators master currently in existence. By far. The release, which KILLS in mono, to the best of my knowledge, has NEVER been reissued in anything but the less-powerful, less-exciting stereo mix. Again, we feel that the Sundazed mono vinyl of the Elevators album is positively DEADLY! Mono, mono, mono!!!

America’s Lost Band, director Michael Stitch’s new documentary about New England garage legends the Remains, will make its world premiere at the 2008 Boston Film Festival in September. The film includes narration by J. Geils Band front man Peter Wolf and in-depth interviews with band leader Barry Tashian and the other Remains as well as members of the Lost and other Northeast '60s garage bands. Using rare film and video footage and newly shot scenes, America’s Lost Band follows the Remains from their early days as a local act through their appearance on TV’s “Ed Sullivan Show,” their fabled opening slot on the Beatles’ final tour, and finally to their recent and triumphant reunion. "The Byrds were still a year and change from their messy end when they played the newly unearthed London show on Live at Royal Albert Hall 1971 (Sundazed). This is the (Untitled)-era Byrds — singer-guitarist Roger McGuinn, drummer Gene Parsons, bassist Skip Battin and lead guitarist Clarence White — in sparkling last-hurrah mettle, mixing space flight and prairie dust in jangle and repertoire, and singing, at the very end, a short, wonderful “Amazing Grace” in backwoods-chapel a cappella harmonies."

UGLY THINGS #27

Co-headlining our big cover story this time are The Who and The Small Faces as Andy Neill reports on their controversial ’68 tour of Australia and New Zealand, complete with an array of WOW-inducing unpublished photos.

Also, for the first time anywhere, the story of Garden Grove garage rock teens The Spats (“She Done Moved,” “Gator Tails & Monkey Ribs”), Brooklyn, NY psych rockers The Koala, and ‘70s NYC punks The Victims. Also on tap, Jon Savage’s revealing interview with Beatles publicist Derek Taylor about Brian Epstein, a conversation with Animals guitarist Hilton Valentine, drop-dead delicious Sixties beat girl/style icon Gillian Hills, R&B songwriting genius Alonzo B Willis, Mike Hudson of the Pagans, and Johan Kugelberg’s countdown of the best junkshop Glam Rock discs.

And there’s more… Sixties garage rock a-go-go with The Heard (“Stop It Baby”), The Persuaders, The Lost Souls, plus more Garage Rock history from California’s Inland Empire. Also: Exotic beat music from Chile and Venezuela, Jack Downing & the Other Side, and Ade Blackburn of Clinic picks his all-time Psychedelic Top 10. All this and more—including, of course, our extensive review section, covering all the latest reissues and music-related books and DVDs.

MOBY GRAPE

Sundazed Music, along with the members of Moby Grape and their management, regret to announce that Sundazed has discontinued the sale and distribution of the first three Moby Grape titles, "Moby Grape," "Wow" and "Grape Jam." The two remaining albums, "Moby Grape '69" and "Truly Fine Citizen," will continue to be available from Sundazed. These titles were manufactured under license for Sundazed by Sony BMG Music Entertainment. It was Sony BMG Music Entertainment's decision to cease production of the first three titles, as a result of a longstanding and ongoing dispute over control of the Moby Grape album catalogue between Sony BMG Music Entertainment and an outside party. As Moby Grape's fans are well aware, the band's career has long been dogged by business disputes far beyond the musicians' control. These issues have contributed to keeping the band's music out of print for lengthy periods—a situation that Sundazed Music had hoped to redress with its exhaustive Moby Grape reissue series.Sony BMG's decision comes as a surprise to Moby Grape and Sundazed, to say the least. Both band and label had invested considerable time, energy and attention into reissuing these albums with the respect and loving care that they have always deserved, and were excited to have the opportunity to make this music available once again to old and new fans.We at Sundazed are disappointed to be unable to continue to distribute the first three Moby Grape titles, but we remain honored to have "Moby Grape '69" and "Truly Fine Citizen" as part of the Sundazed catalogue.

The 45 RPM single — a revered record format that Sundazed will keep functional forever! Micro Grooves spinning on a turntable with fuzzed-out mayhem blurting from your tiny speakers. How good can it get?
