Beloved midwest garage-rock kings and Sundazed recording artists the Trashmen will perform their FIRST-EVER New York-area shows, on October 23 at Southpaw in Brooklyn and October 24 at Maxwell's in Hoboken.
The seminal foursome—original members Tony Andreason, Dal Winslow and Bob Reed, with Tony's brother Mark Andreason taking over for the late Steve Wahrer on drums—will deliver such immortal Trashmen classics as "A-Bone," "Tube City," "King Of The Surf," "My Woodie" and the bigger-than-life anthem "Surfin' Bird," recently proclaimed the Greatest Song of All Time by no less an authority than The Family Guy's Peter Griffin.
Hard as it may be to believe, these shows mark the first time that the Trashmen have played in the New York City area. According to Dal Winslow, "In the early '60s, we played a club in New Jersey and around the Finger Lakes region, but we never hit New York City. It's been a long tome coming, like 40 years, and we're really looking forward to it!"
As a bonus these shows coincide with the WFMU Record Fair at the Manhattan Pavillion, where the Sundazed booth will, as always, be supplying smashing sounds to satisfied shoppers!
Don't miss the opportunity to see the Trashmen live at these venues!:
Mark down the dates of the upcoming WFMU Record Fair in New York City. Scheduled for October 23-25, once again at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W. 18th St, in splendidly autumnal Manhattan. As always, the Sundazed staff will be there, perched next to a few tables loaded down with orange crates full of reasonably-priced vinyl rarities and, of course, all the hottest new Sundazed releases. As Time Out New York once put it: "Sell your clothes, sell your books, sell your soul to get some extra cash to blow at this event, probably the best of its kind anywhere in the U.S."
Semi-trucks groaning with Sundazed product have been rumbling through the streets of Coxsackie nonstop, night and day, for twelve months straight. Our neighbors are getting nervous; dogs are barking. We released so much superb music last year that even we were flabbergasted when we reflected on what's happened over the past 12 months. Whether it's the pounding, teenage-caveman sound of garage rock, the shimmering, shoot-the-moon strains of surf music, the mind-altering, electrical-banana aroma of psychedelic rock or the all-terrain-vehicle friendly twang of country, you must know by now that Sundazed has exactly what makes your heart go flip-flop. And if you think 2008 was pretty fabulous, you'd better hold onto your hat for an even more spectacular voyage in 2009! It'll make Mr. Toad's Wild Ride look like a Sunday school picnic. OK, just to make sure you haven't missed anything, here it is: the complete roadmap to the Wonderful World of Sundazed—with every single item we released in 2008! Knock yourself out!
In memory of our friend Drake Levin...
Drake Levin, the man who played those unforgettable guitar licks on the big hits of Paul Revere & the Raiders, died on the Fourth of July. Clad in eye-catching Revolutionary War-era greatcoats and tri-corner hats, Levin and bassist Phil "Fang" Volk were a thrilling sight when they went into their tightly choreographed leg-kicking routines on classic Raiders Top 10 smashes "Just Like Me," "Hungry," "Good Thing" and, of course, "Kicks." The Raiders were Dick Clark's hand-picked house band for his wildly popular ABC-TV show Where The Action Is, a daily teenage rave-up that usually found the Raiders romping through the surf at a Southern California beach or cutting up pool-side in Beverly Hills. Sundazed will dearly miss the good humor and longtime friendship of Drake Levin, a man we will always remember, along with Derek Leckenby of Herman's Hermits and Zal Yanovsky of the Lovin' Spoonful, as one of the truly great, unsung guitarists of the 1960s.
In memory of our friend Sky Saxon...
Sky Saxon, the mesmerizing frontman for Los Angeles garage-rock legends the Seeds, and longtime friend of Sundazed, died on June 25. One of the top attractions in a stellar array of talent that lit up Hollywood's Sunset Strip in 1966, the Seeds shared stages with Southern California heroes the Byrds, Love and Buffalo Springfield as well as up-and-coming stars like the Doors. The Seeds hit the top of the national charts in late '66/early '67 with their signature tune, "Pushin' Too Hard." Born Richard Marsh in Salt Lake City, Utah, Sky Saxon was at the top of his game when he played Cave Stomp in November, 1998 at Greenwich Village hotspot Coney Island High (photo, front left to right: Jud Cost, Sky Saxon, Bob Irwin, Mark Lindsay, flanked in the back by the Chesterfield Kings and the Mysterians). We will dearly miss frequent long chats with Sky about everything from music to the meaning of the cosmos. Photo by Melissa Mannion.
Wanda Jackson inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Rockabilly firebrand Wanda Jackson was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and there's no better way to celebrate the occasion than with this 10" vinyl collection of the pioneering female rocker's historic 1958 performances on the seminal Los Angeles-based TV show Town Hall Party. Originally discovered singing at an Oklahoma radio station by honky-tonk star Hank Thompson, and subsequently convinced by onetime boyfriend Elvis Presley to apply her searing voice to rock 'n' roll material, Jackson became the first artist to demonstrate that women could rock as fiercely as their male counterparts, and these classic tracks capture her at her rockin' peak. Backed by a stellar band headed by guitar legend Joe Maphis, Wanda tears into incendiary renditions of her classic "Mean, Mean Man," her then-current Capitol Records single "Rock Your Baby," a distinctive reading of the Faron Young hit "Alone (With You)" and a show-stopping take of the Elvis Presley hit "Hard Headed Woman," from Elvis' then-current film King Creole. Jackson would later have a long and successful career as a country balladeer, before returning to her rock 'n' roll roots. But she's never been more raw and wild than on this raucous, rocking vintage session, now sounding better than ever on Sundazed's high-definition, ten-inch vinyl.
Sundazed Records mourns the passing of legendary guitar hero and rock 'n' roll icon Ron Asheton. As a founding member of The Stooges, Asheton earned a singular reputation for his relentless, fiercely distorted guitar attack, which became a cornerstone of punk and established Asheton as one of the most original and influential axemen of his era. Asheton (whom Rolling Stone ranked in the Top 30 of its "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time") subsequently solidified his reputation with his work with such cult-favorite combos as The New Order, New Race and Destroy All Monsters. More recently, his wildly successful tours with the reunited Stooges won Asheton the adulation of a new generation of fans. Sundazed is honored to have been associated with Ron Asheton and honors the contributions of this one-of-a-kind rock ‘n’ roll icon.

Our customers are asking...
What is the source material you've used for your mono 13th Floor Elevators LP???
Bob Irwin replies: Many, many years ago - in fact, during the earliest years of Sundazed - I had extremely brief access to a 1:1 (Summit Sound) copy of the original mono master for the Elevators album; myself and another producer-friend were digging deep in a major label's vault and came across a huge load (hundreds?... thousands?) of ancient analog tapes, all undocumented, that were apparently intended for record-club use, (or had been submitted to the label/club for release consideration). Thankfully - with a wonderfully cooperative librarian's help - I quietly copied the reel (to 30ips 1/2" analog tape), because when I went to see if I could again extricate it just a few months ago, I was informed that all of those particular record-club tapes had been "scrapped nearly 15 years ago"... (And you can't believe some of the other things that were in there - it would make you cry...)
Admittedly, the reel was in less-than-stellar shape in some spots, ie: due to an improper wind, some of the endings of songs by the leader tape exhibited oxide-loss issues, etc.. When mastering our album, rather than pulling the fader early (as I believe has been done on all other versions of this release currently available), I sourced and attached approximately four endings/fade-outs, each less than 6 seconds, from a mint, mono, original I.A. pressing of the album.
As far as we're concerned, our new mono vinyl version is the best sounding Elevators master currently in existence. By far. The release, which KILLS in mono, to the best of my knowledge, has NEVER been reissued in anything but the less-powerful, less-exciting stereo mix. Again, we feel that the Sundazed mono vinyl of the Elevators album is positively DEADLY! Mono, mono, mono!!!
Exclusive interview: Chris Darrow of THE KALEIDOSCOPE
Chris Darrow of THE KALEIDOSCOPE talks with Sundazed's Jud Cost about his life and times with The Kaleidoscope.....
If you'd prefer to get your kicks by unearthing a hideously rare, French picture-sleeve single by the Byrds, rather than sitting by the pool and sipping Beaujolais with Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall, then fail at your peril to mark down the dates of the upcoming WFMU Record Fair in New York City. Scheduled for October 24-26, once again at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W. 18th St, in splendidly autumnal Manhattan - not too far from where King Kong was toppled by the Air Force. As always, the Sundazed staff will be there, perched next to a few tables loaded down with orange crates full of reasonably-priced vinyl rarities and, of course, all the hottest new Sundazed releases. Best of all, it's a chance to rub elbows with a crowd of people who feel the same way you do about life. Jerry Cole Memorial AND Benefit Concert
Everyone here at Sundazed was deeply saddened by the passing of guitar genius Jerry Cole on May 28. As a key member of the L.A. studio scene’s exalted “Wrecking Crew” of top session players, Cole has long been worshipped for his work with everyone from the Beach Boys, the Byrds, and Them to Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra; surf fans knew Cole as the leader of the godlike Spacemen, and he was also the driving force behind the Animated Egg and other fantastic studio-only psychedelic acts.
On Saturday, October 25, from noon to 5pm, several of Cole’s most celebrated peers from his Wrecking Crew days and the rock 'n' roll, country, and jazz scenes will gather for a special concert to honor his memory and benefit his family. The event will take place at the Baked Potato in Studio City, California, and will feature performances by drummer Hal Blaine, pianist Don Randi, singer and actor Tommy Sands, bongo king Preston Epps, rockabilly legend Glen Glenn, R&B singer Jewel Aiken, Belairs and P.J. and the Galaxies guitarist Paul Johnson, Jon & the Nightriders, and many others.
Sundazed is deeply saddened at the passing of legendary songwriter and founder of the Magicians, Alan Gordon, at the age of 64. Alan Gordon was a unique songwriting talent who possessed the genius to write chart-topping tunes to order, but still write them from the heart. He composed strong, memorable melodies and intelligent lyrics with humor, poise and charm. The word that might best describe Gordon's art is "craftsman," a valued trait that has become increasingly rare in this day of computer-driven music.
Born in Natick, Mass. in 1944, Gordon formed the Magicians, which also would include his eventual songwriting partner, Bronx native Gary Bonner, in 1965. The hungry, young, New York-based combo cut a handful of singles for Columbia before realizing they had an innate knack for catchy melodies and clever lyrics that would become national hits for other acts. In addition to composing "Happy Together"—the signature song for the Turtles and voted by publishing giant BMI as one of the Top 50 singles of the 20th century—Gordon and Bonner also wrote tunes for artists as diverse as: the Lovin' Spoonful, Petula Clark, Gary Lewis, Barbra Streisand, Gene Pitney, Freddie Fender, Bobby Darin, Alice Cooper, Dr. Demento, Frank Zappa and the Archies.
As Gary Bonner says: "Alan was one of the brightest lights this world has ever had. His music will live on." Perhaps Alan Gordon, himself, ever the eloquent tunesmith, put it best: "As long as there's an April, a girl and a boy, there will always be music, and I'll be around." Sundazed will deeply miss our longtime friend and colleague. :: View the Magicians releases on Sundazed HERE!
Artie and Beverly Traum at the home of Bob and Mary Irwin.
Artie Traum, a giant of the New York City folk scene of the 1960s, died on June 20 at his Woodstock home. A vital cog in the bustling Greenwich Village scene that spawned folk icons Bob Dylan, Fred Neil and Dave Van Ronk, among countless others, Artie Traum paired up with his brother Happy to cut an LP for Capitol in 1969 that the New York Times called "one of the best records in any field of pop music." Over the past 40 years, Artie's excellent guitar work appeared on over 35 LPs in a bountiful career that included working with the Band, John Sebastian, Richie Havens, Pete Seeger, Eric Anderson, Maria Muldaur, James Taylor, Paul Butterfield, Bela Fleck and Allen Ginsberg. Artie, whose music equally straddled a love for jug band music and contemporary jazz, was a vibrant, quick-witted, warm human being who will be sorely missed by everyone who ever knew him or loved his music. Sundazed's Bob and Mary Irwin profoundly miss their dear friend and longtime project collaborator and send their deepest regrets and love to Artie's wife Beverly and his entire family.
BLUEBERRY CD RELEASE PARTY PHOTOS
Just in case you missed the Blueberry CD release party that Sundazed hosted on July 26, we've posted some photos from the event. Blueberry played two stunning sets at Jason's Upstairs Bar in Hudson, NY to celebreate the Sundazed/Euphoria release of her self-titled CD, and our photographers were there to capture the event.
STUDIO GUITAR LEGEND JERRY COLE DIES AT 68
Jerry Cole, one of the premier session guitarists from the glory-days of pop and rock 'n' roll, died Wednesday, May 28 at the age of 68. When he wasn't busy fronting budding surf stars Jerry Cole and the Spacemen for 3 albums on the Capitol label, Cole was right at home playing whatever someone else's recording date called for. Whether it was surf, country, jazz, blues or psychedelia, Jerry Cole could do it all. Cole played on dates by both Frank and Nancy Sinatra, Elvis Presley, the Byrds, Ray Charles, Ricky Nelson, Dick Dale, the Beach Boys, B.B. King Johnny Rivers and a multitude of others too numerous to mention. In addition to all his well-documented studio work, Cole filled many a late night by recording hundreds of low-priced budget LPs under a bevy of assumed group names. He enlisted the very best studio-honed musicians to cut these drugstore-ready recordings: Earl Palmer on drums, Larry Knechtel on bass, Steve Douglas on tenor sax and Don Randi on keyboards. "It would flow so much easier because these guys knew exactly what was demanded of them," said Cole to Sundazed in 2005. Of all the plaudits that came his way, Cole was proudest of being legendary record producer Phil Spector's favorite guitarist. "I beat out Glen Campbell, I beat out James Burton, I beat out Tommy Tedesco," said Cole. "I thought that was pretty much of an honor." A vital part of the extended Sundazed family and a man every bit as professional in an interview as he was in the studio, Jerry Cole will be deeply missed. :: Jerry Cole releases on Sundazed

ROGER MCGUINN'S PRIVATE BYRDS ARCHIVES TO BE
RELEASED on sundazed
Byrds founder and front man Roger McGuinn talks to UNCUT Magazine about Sundazed's upcoming releases of never before issued Byrds material.
Sundazed Music, along with the members of Moby Grape and their management, regret to announce that Sundazed has discontinued the sale and distribution of the first three Moby Grape titles, "Moby Grape," "Wow" and "Grape Jam." The two remaining albums, "Moby Grape '69" and "Truly Fine Citizen," will continue to be available from Sundazed. These titles were manufactured under license for Sundazed by Sony BMG Music Entertainment. It was Sony BMG Music Entertainment's decision to cease production of the first three titles, as a result of a longstanding and ongoing dispute over control of the Moby Grape album catalogue between Sony BMG Music Entertainment and an outside party. As Moby Grape's fans are well aware, the band's career has long been dogged by business disputes far beyond the musicians' control. These issues have contributed to keeping the band's music out of print for lengthy periods—a situation that Sundazed Music had hoped to redress with its exhaustive Moby Grape reissue series.Sony BMG's decision comes as a surprise to Moby Grape and Sundazed, to say the least. Both band and label had invested considerable time, energy and attention into reissuing these albums with the respect and loving care that they have always deserved, and were excited to have the opportunity to make this music available once again to old and new fans.We at Sundazed are disappointed to be unable to continue to distribute the first three Moby Grape titles, but we remain honored to have "Moby Grape '69" and "Truly Fine Citizen" as part of the Sundazed catalogue.

EXCLUSIVE JIM FLORA DESIGN SUNDAZED T-SHIRTS
Jim Flora (1914-1998) created dozens of fun, yet diabolic album covers for Columbia Records and RCA Victor during the 1940s and '50s. His canvases pulsed with angular hepcats bearing funnel-tapered noses and shark-fin chins who fingered cockeyed pianos and honked lollipop-hued horns.
Flora has posthumously added Sundazed to his client roster: his heirs have authorized us to feature a vintage Flora rocket ship illustration on a special edition t-shirt. The space cruiser originally appeared on the back of a 1958 LP by guitarist Billy Mure.
These special edition t-shirts are available in two color combinations:

Talk about a takeoff! Sales of Sundazed’s unearthed Byrds Live at Royal Albert Hall 1971 set have really hit the stratosphere, climbing to number one-selling live rock album and number three-selling country rock album, and hitting the top 100 in pop album sales at leading music retailer Amazon.com

This is the (Untitled)-era Byrds — singer-guitarist Roger McGuinn, drummer Gene Parsons, bassist Skip Battin and lead guitarist Clarence White — in sparkling last-hurrah mettle, mixing space flight and prairie dust in jangle and repertoire, and singing, at the very end, a short, wonderful “Amazing Grace” in backwoods-chapel a cappella harmonies." —David Fricke Rolling Stone Magazine
