Mel & Tim

Discovered by Gene “Duke of Earl” Chandler, Chicago soul duo Mel & Tim (aka cousins Mel Hardin and Tim McPherson) struck Top 10 gold with 1969’s eternal party anthem “Backfield in Motion.” The follow-up single, “Good Guys Only Win in the Movies,” which hit the Top 20 later that year, was the also the title track of their debut LP on Chandler’s Bamboo label. Mel & Tim later moved to Stax Records and performed at 1972’s legendary Wattstax concert in L.A.
