Often called the original goth rocker, the husky-voiced Nico made her full-length solo debut after leaving the Velvet Underground in 1967 with the orchestrated folk rock of Chelsea Girl. But it was in 1969 that the German-born former supermodel released what most fans consider her definitive opus: the icy, bleak, and Teutonic masterpiece The Marble Index. Although the singerís legendarily troubled career yielded several more albums before her tragic 1988 demise, they all hark plainly back to the stark claustrophobia of The Marble Index for their templates. Few artists before or since have made sadness and despair so endlessly alluring.
