The Peanut Butter Conspiracy

With a name that sticks to both the roof of the mind and the roof of the mouth, L.A.’s Peanut Butter Conspiracy have been described as a “Sunset Stripped-down” version of the Jefferson Airplane—thanks mainly to singer Sandi Robison’s commanding voice and the band’s jangling psychedelic-meets-folk-rock attack (curiously, an early incarnation of the group, the Ashes, had featured future Airplane drummer Spencer Dryden). Under the wing of famed studio guru Gary Usher (Sagittarius, innumerable surf and hot rod sessions), cut two brilliant albums for Columbia, 1967’s The Peanut Butter Conspiracy is Spreading and ’68’s The Great Conspiracy; discs bearing soaring acid/psych/folk-rock treasures like the singles “It’s a Happening Thing” and “Turn On a Friend (to the Good Life)” and the crashing, harmony-laced “Captain Sandwich.” So spread the word: The Peanut Butter Conspiracy is a happening thing!
