Santana

Formed as the Santana Blues Band in 1966, Santana was one of the last major acts spawned by the famously fertile San Francisco scene. Without doubt the leading proponent of Latin rock, the band’s often-imitated-but-never-duplicated early sound blends the stinging blues licks of leader and guitarist Carlos Santana with the mind-expanding psychedelia of the West Coast and the torrid polyrhythms of traditional Latin styles. Released in 1969, the group’s self-titled debut arrived the same month as its momentous performance at Woodstock and yielded the Top 40 smashes “Evil Ways” and “Jingo.” 1970’s Abraxas brought continued success with its hit interpretations of Tito Puente’s “Oye Como Va” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Black Magic Woman.” As the Seventies wore on, Santana took on more of a jazz-influenced sound but remained a formidable concert attraction. In 1999 the band enjoyed a huge resurgence and picked up several Grammy Awards for Supernatural.
