Mel Brown

Guitarist Mel Brown’s greasy, down-home style encompasses blues, jazz, funk, and soul, and has won him a dedicated following among rare-groove aficionados worldwide. Outside of his solo work, the Mississippi-born maverick has flexed his slinky fingers with blues gods T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker, Etta James, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Bobby “Blue” Bland, among others. In the late 1960s Brown cut a series of excellent LPs under his own name, most notably ’67’s Chicken Fat, a marvelously funky, organ-heavy, soul-based outing that pairs the leader with jazz guitarist Herb Ellis and top keyboardist Gerald Wiggins.
