Sundazed Music Announces the Online Digital Debut of Buck Owens and His Buckaroos'
Historic Album Catalog!

The digital revolution catches up with the spirit of hardcore honky tonk! Sundazed Music is proud to make the album catalog of country music pioneer Buck Owens available for digital download, through iTunes and other online services. This digital catalog campaign marks the first time that the bulk of Owens' seminal work will be available for download.

This beloved, massively influential body of music-encompassing over 25 original albums by Owens and his legendary band the Buckaroos, along with several more albums by Owens-associated acts-was originally released by the artist's longtime label Capitol Records between 1961 and 1971, and was previously ushered into the CD era by Sundazed Music throughout the past two decades. Those widely acclaimed CD releases were instrumental in generating a renewed appreciation for Owens' musical achievements, introducing him to a new generation of enthusiastic fans.

In addition to those classic releases, Sundazed is also releasing Country Pickin': The Don Rich Anthology, a compilation spotlighting the sublime instrumental and vocal talents of Owens' longtime best friend and musical right-hand man; Best of the Buckaroos, which collects instrumental highlights from the band's own spinoff albums; and The Best of Buddy Alan Owens, a featuring Buck's talented son, who scored a series of country hits in the early 1970s.

Long before the silver sparkle Telecasters and Hee-Haw,” Buck Owens was trodding the boards of Bakersfield bar stages, paying his dues and winning fans one twang at a time. Released on January 30, 1961, Buck Owens’ self-titled debut LP marked the start of his long, unprecedented career as a recording artist for Capitol Records. Bolstered by four charting singles- “Second Fiddle,” “Under Your Spell Again,” “Above and Beyond” and “Excuse Me (I Think I’ve Got a Heartache)”- the album spotlights the hard-edged honky tonk sound that Buck had honed in the clubs. Featuring Buck on electric guitar, Ralph Mooney on steel guitar, studio fiddler Jelly Sanders and future Buckaroo Don Rich, also on fiddle, Buck Owens is a startlingly mature debut album. In addition to the four hit singles and eight original album tracks, this painstakingly remastered reissue also contains two rare bonus tracks: “High as the Mountains” and the original recording of “Nobody’s Fool But Yours” previously issued only on a rare Capitol label hits anthology.

His third full-length LP for Capitol, 1962’s You’re For Me found Buck evolving rapidly as an artist. The title cut, which hit #10 on the country singles chart, was a song he had originally written for Tommy Collins in 1954. Beyond the chart position and airplay the song garnered, it was significant for introducing Buck’s trademark “Freight Train” sound, employing a hard drum backbeat in driving 2/4 time. He later explained that he “always loved music that had lots of beat. I always wanted to sound like a locomotive comin’ through the front room.”

In addition to the title track, the album contains three other chart hits: “Under the Influence of Love,” “Nobody’s Fool But Yours,” and “House Down the Block.” Featured throughout the album are the legendary twin Telecasters of Buck and musical partner Don Rich. Their fleet-fingered fretwork is especially prominent on two instrumentals, “Mexican Polka” and “Country Polka.” After just one listen, you’ll know why there was never an empty spot on the dance floor when Buck Owens was on the bandstand!

Based around numbers he was performing in his live shows, 1963’s On the Bandstand features a mix of self-penned songs and then-current country favorites. Besides Buck, the spotlight shines on individual band members throughout the album. Speaking of the band, they were mere months away from being named The Buckaroos, courtesy of Merle Haggard who served briefly as their bass player before moving on to his own solo career. The sole hit on the original version of the album was “Kickin’ Our Hearts Around,” a song written especially for Buck by Capitol Records label mate Wanda Jackson. This edition of the albums adds two bonus tracks: a rerecording of “Sweethearts in Heaven” and “We’re the Talk of the Town.” Both songs included duet partner Rose Maddox and both songs, the A and B sides of the same 45 RPM single, were Top Twenty hits. Forget the “Orange Blossom Special,” there was no stopping the Buck Owens’ express!

Taking its name from the unprecedented double-sided #1 country single, the Together Again/My Heart Skips a Beat album established Buck Owens as a top-tier country artist. The two title tracks spent several weeks chasing each other up the country charts in 1964, even switching the #1 and #2 positions in consecutive weeks and then switching back again! Beyond those two classic tracks, the album is filled with other charting singles and well-known songs like “Hello Trouble,” “A-11” and “Close Up the Honky Tonks.” This meticulously remastered Sundazed Music edition also contains two bonus tracks that happen to be two of Buck’s biggest hits. “Love’s Gonna Live Here” spent an astonishing 16 (!) weeks at #1 on the country charts in 1963 and Buck’s first #1 single, “Act Naturally,” was soon covered by his Capitol Records label mates The Beatles, who were racking up a few of their own hit singles at the time. The Beatles’ version, sung by fan favorite Ringo, helped introduce Buck and his Buckaroos to a whole new audience. Next stop, Carnegie Hall!

There was no stopping Buck Owens in 1964! I Don’t Care, released in November of that year, contained another #1 smash country hit in the title track. The album also initiated the tradition of showcasing the individual talents of the Buckaroos along with Buck himself. Featuring vocals by bassist Doyle Holly and guitarist/fiddle player Don Rich, the band turned in spirited renditions of current country hits like “Abilene” and “Louisiana Man.” Buck also served notice of his premier guitar prowess on the instrumental “Buck’s Polka.” The two bonus tracks on this remastered Sundazed Music edition are instrumental versions of “I Don’t Care” and “Don’t Let Her Know,” originally found on the album The Buck Owens Songbook. Buck Owens and His Buckaroos - I've Got A Tiger By The Tail - Download on iTunes

Driving down the dusty roads of West Texas in songwriter Harlan Howard’s Cadillac, Buck and Harlan wrote the title track of I’ve Got a Tiger by the Tail after being inspired by a sign at an ESSO gas station. Another monster hit for Buck and his Buckaroos, it was released as a single in the waning days of December 1964. Debuting at #8 and quickly rising to #1, it held the pole position on the country charts for five weeks. This hit laden album also contains Buck’s timeless composition “Crying Time.” While not a hit for Buck, Ray Charles’ cover of the song became a top ten pop hit in 1966. Buck’s rollicking rendition of Chuck Berry’s “Memphis” rankled the feathers of some traditional country fans, but it was right in line with his penchant for songs with a big beat. That Buckaroo beat is on full display in the two bonus tracks of this Sundazed Music edition. Recorded at Bakersfield’s Civic Auditorium in 1963, these performances of “This Ol’ Heart” and “Act Naturally” provide a rare early listen to Buck’s blazing live shows.

His tenth Capitol LP in four years and second of 1965, Before You Go/No One But You continued Buck Owens' prolific hit-making roll. The lead title track spent six long weeks at #1 on the country charts and features two distinct tempos: upbeat at the beginning before switching abruptly to waltz time. Co-written by Buck and Red Simpson, “Gonna Have Love” features a hook-heavy guitar riff from Don Rich and was another successful single. More Buckaroo wizardry was delivered by steel guitarist Tom Brumley in his scorching serving of Leon McAuliffe’s “Steel Guitar Rag.” Brumley and Rich are also featured prominently on the two bonus tracks of this Sundazed Music remastered edition, instrumental versions of “Love’s Gonna Live Here” and “Before You Go.” Turn it up and clear the dance floor!

During his peak recording years, many of Buck’s LP’s featured one or more instrumentals, spotlighting the Buckaroos’ superior solo skills. The core band of guitarist/fiddler Don Rich, steel guitarist Tom Brumley, bassist Doyle Holly, drummer Willie Cantu and Buck himself on transcendent Telecaster leads all have a chance to shine on these selections. The Instrumental Hits collects previously released tracks, some of which had appeared on earlier Buck albums. The lone exception is the lead track, a sparkling instrumental titled “Buckaroo.” Rising to #1 on the charts, it has taken its place as a signature composition in the genre’s songbook and is a mandatory learning exercise for any aspiring country guitarist. Give a listen to The Instrumental Hits and hear how Buck and his Buckaroos created some of the finest country combo recordings ever made.

Released in February 1966, Roll Out the Red Carpet arrived in the midst of a flurry of Buck Owens hit singles. It is all the more unusual, then, that none of the selections on this album would chart. Even more unusual, the title track was not even released as a single. However, the lack of chart action is in no way a comment on the album’s quality. Yet again, Buck and his Buckaroos serve up a superior mix of tracks: some upbeat, some ballads but all expertly sung and played. Guitar fans will want to take special note of Don Rich’s twangy Telecaster licks on the charging “Hanging On to What I Got.” Don is also featured on the title instrument in “Cajun Fiddle.” Elsewhere, Buck is featured on the humorous “We Split the Blanket” and the plaintive ballad “Cinderella.” And don’t miss steel guitarist Tom Brumley’s rip-roaring performance on the instrumental “Tom Cattin’”! With an album this strong, who needs hit singles?

Riding the crest of fame, Buck Owens never thought of slowing down in 1966. Marking a departure from his last few albums, Open Up Your Heart features Buck as the sole lead vocalist on all cuts. The title track, one of three #1 singles on the album, features chicken pickin’ Telecaster licks courtesy of guest guitarist James Burton. It stayed atop the country charts for six weeks. Other standout tracks include the blue-collar broadside “Sam’s Place” (inspired by a real establishment in Richmond, CA), the humorous “Waitin’ In Your Welfare Line” and the mid-tempo hit “Think of Me,” which featured lyrics taken from a poem sent to Buck by a fan. This Sundazed edition, painstakingly remastered for your listening pleasure, adds two bonus tracks: the original mono single versions of “Open Up Your Heart” and “Think of Me.” Think this is another terrific album by Buck and his Buckaroos? The collaboration continued as Buck rose to be a top recording artist and the relocated Howard became one of Nashville’s top songsmiths. On Buck Owens Sings Harlan Howard, Buck performs eleven of his favorite Howard compositions, two of them co-written with Buck, and adds one of his own, “Think It Over,” for good measure. Back when Buck Owens was a struggling guitar player, bouncing around the bars of Bakersfield, Tommy Collins heard him and hired him for his band. When Capitol Records producer Ken Nelson heard Buck’s skills during a Collins recording session, he was so impressed that he began using him on other artists’ sessions regularly and signed him to the label as a solo artist. With Buck Owens Sings Tommy Collins, Buck acknowledged the career boost given to him by Tommy and repaid the favor by recording twelve of his favorite Collins compositions. As you listen to Buck’s renditions of Collins classics like “If You Ain’t Lovin’ You Ain’t Livin’,” you’ll hear the obvious respect he has for his former employer’s repertoire. You’ll also hear a singer and guitarist at the top of his game, ably abetted by top-notch instrumentalists, including longtime Buckaroo Don Rich. Whatcha gonna do now? Recorded at Tokyo’s Kosei Nenkin Hall on February 6, 1967 before a standing room only crowd, Buck Owens and his Buckaroos' In Japan! was the first live country album ever recorded outside the United States. Such was the band’s popularity in Japan that the crowd was on their feet from the first note to the last. Buck wrote a song specifically for the concert, titled “Tokyo Polka,” which combined the musical strains of the U.S. and Japan, arriving at a unique “country & eastern” style. “Second Fiddle,” the first Buck Owens single released in Japan, receives a particularly rousing welcome from the crowd as you will hear. And while you’ll hear announcer Tetsuo Otsuka interpreting Buck’s stage remarks for the crowd, the music of Buck and the boys needed no translation whatsoever. Listen to one of the finest country bands ever to grace a stage, from Tennessee to Tokyo!

Inspired by a phrase Buck often said to his concert audiences, the title track of 1968’s It Takes People Like You to Make People Like Me was written as a “thank you” to his legions of fans. Beyond the title track, there is much to be thankful for on this admirable album. Back by the inimitable Buckaroos and select special guests, the “Tiger” is enjoying himself immensely here. With all twelve tracks written or co-written by Buck, the album flew in the face of Nashville’s countrypolitan song factory. Furthermore, it showed the real connection Buck had with his audience on songs like “Where Does the Good Times Go,” “We Were Made For Each Other” and “Heartbreak Mountain.” This sensational Sundazed Music edition features two bonus tracks: the original mono single version of both “It Takes People Like You (to Make People Like Me)” and “Where Does the Good Times Go.”

With Buck Owens riding a tide of hit singles and top-selling albums, the time was right in 1965 to record his first Christmas album. Not content to re-do the same old holiday standbys, Buck and the band worked up a new batch of Christmas classics. Even the lone traditional song, “Jingle Bells,” received a brand spanking new arrangement courtesy of Buckaroo Don Rich. “Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy,” penned by Buck and Don, quickly became a perennial song of the season, thanks to it humorous lyrics and infectious melody. That songs’ rollicking sentiment is balanced by selections like the yearning “All I Want For Christmas is You,” another Owens/Rich collaboration. From boot stompers to ballads, this album has it all. Perennial trailblazers whose electrifying Bakersfield sound topped the country charts for most of the ’60s, Buck Owens and the Buckaroos plowed even newer ground with the 1971 album Bridge Over Troubled Water. Bridge finds Buck and the boys giving a big thumbs-up to the thoughtful folk-rock sound of Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan and Donovan. Bridge Over Troubled Water saw heavy chart action, justifying Buck Owens’ desire to roll with the times while also detailing his conversion from chart-topping country artist to Country Music Hall Of Fame shoo-in. This title was personally selected for reissue on Sundazed by Buck himself!

Buck Owens And His Buckaroos - Ruby & Other Bluegrass Specials - Download on iTunes

As a boy growing up on an isolated dairy farm outside Sherman, Texas, Buck Owens was enthralled by the Monroe Brothers, Wayne Rainey and the other bluegrass musicians he heard on the powerful border radio station XELO. Buck carried this love of bluegrass music throughout his career, transforming the pile driving rhythm of genre patriarch Bill Monroe into his own “freight train” sound. Having recently opened his own studio in Bakersfield, Buck was free to record the music that he wanted and 1971’s Ruby & Other Bluegrass Specials was the outstanding result. Making no attempt to adhere to the strict acoustic lineup of the bluegrass pioneers, Buck interpreted the music his way. Featuring the #1 hit “Ruby,” the album mixes classic songs with new compositions, spotlighting the talents of Don Rich on fiddle and newest Buckaroo Ron Jackson on banjo. This love letter to his boyhood heroes reached #9 on the Billboard Country Album Charts and #1 on the Cashbox chart, validating his decision step outside the norm and follow his own path.

Buck Owens and His Buckaroos - In London - Download on iTunes

Buck Owens was the original, border-bustin’ ambassador of American country music. Beginning with his acclaimed live stint at Carnegie Hall, to Japan where the crowd’s overwhelming enthusiasm was downright staggering, Buck would continue to herd his posse into venues worldwide. But he’d wait to hit yet another landmark locale before recording his next live album. At the renown London Palladium, Buck and his Buckaroos performed a full program of their all-time hits and added to the festive frenzy with then-recent, single successes like “Who’s Gonna Mow Your Grass” and “Johnny B. Goode.” And it’s all captured here: from emcee David Allen’s introduction to Buck’s affectionate on-stage patter to the stellar performances themselves. An album to be royally remembered and relived, Sundazed is proud to present Buck Owens in London on compact disc for the first time. Enhanced with informative new liners, bonus tracks and much more, it’s a gala affair as only a born ’n’ bred Bakersfield boy could do it!

Buck Owens’ legendary live albums from Carnegie Hall, Japan and London were landmark efforts that captured Buck and the Buckaroos at their peak, but he also recorded other live albums overseas. The most obscure of Buck’s live releases was his April 1970 show in Oslo, Norway that featured Don Rich with the Buckaroos, Buck’s son Buddy Alan and the Hagers. Fiery and intense, it reflects that unique early ’70s period when Buck was experimenting and broadening his sound beyond his old style. With only a couple thousand copies pressed for the Norwegian market, this was Buck’s rarest album.

Spotlighting the flying fingers of Buckaroos guitar-picking whiz Don Rich, the full-bodied pedal steel of Tom Brumley and the rocksteady rhythm of bassist Doyle Holly backed by the solid beat of drummers Willie Cantu and Jerry Wiggins, this Buckaroos smorgasbord is the perfect introduction to the band that created the Bakersfield Sound behind country music Hall of Famer Buck Owens. Here's the definitive example of their forward-thinking style — an electrified honky-tonk sound that wowed the crowds wherever they played. This set clearly defines what made the vibrant Bakersfield sound of Buck Owens and the Buckaroos compelling enough to grab the country charts by the throat in the mid-'60s and not let go, while scoring plenty of cross-over pop-chart success at the same time.

If family lineage had anything to do with it, Buddy Alan would have been a slam-dunk as a country music star. Fortunately, Alan — the son of Bonnie Owens and Country Music Hall of Fame member Buck Owens and the stepson of Bonnie's second husband, Hall of Famer Merle Haggard — had the talent to back up his illustrious background. From his earliest recordings, a duet with Buck Owens in 1968 and his first solo single, written by Haggard, it was apparent that Buddy had his own sound and the record-buying public loved it. Here is a long-overdue career-retrospective, rounding up the very best of the distinctive stylings of Buddy Alan, featuring all the early duets with his dad and the chart-topping singles that soon followed.
