In south Texas many musicians believed that a band had to be from somewhere else to be successful. So when local entrepreneur Colonel Paul Beckingham decided to take the San Antonio group The Hangmen to the top, he changed their name to the Five Canadians.

Beckingham booked the Five Canadians at the semi-legendary Abe Epstein Studios in May ‘66 to record “Writing On The Wall.” It was apparent that Bruce needed a higher-quality instrument than the three octave chord organ (little more than a toy) used on the “I’m Gonna Love You” sessions recorded in January 1966. So the band skipped school and went shopping. Bruce called his mom from Alamo Music Center, got the salesman to talk her into buying a Farfisa Compact, and they headed for the studio. “Writing On The Wall” was finished in three takes and is reason enough for the Five Canadians to be enshrined in the Sundazed Garage of Fame; the two other ravers heard here only add to their legend!
